Let’s get mixing!

The tools you’ll need to make non-alcoholic cocktails at home

To create a home cocktail making set-up for the ages, you’ll need to have the right equipment. Because after all, what is a Master without their tools? Here are some of the essential items you’ll need to start shaking up delicious non-alcoholic cocktails at home in no time. You can find them at homewares stores, department stores, kitchen stores and even some local supermarkets.

Jigger

A jigger is a small hourglass-shaped double cup made of metal that is used to measure drink ingredients precisely. If you don’t have one of these, you can always just use a shot glass marked with measurements.

Cocktail shaker

Cocktails are made to, well… shake cocktails (you guessed it). These are two types of shakers; the Boston shaker (which you need a separate cocktail strainer for) and the standard shaker (which will come with a built-in strainer).

Muddler

A muddler is a long stick that you can use to mash ingredients to release their flavours and aromas, like mint, passionfruit or sugar cubes.

Metal bar spoon with a long handle

Basically, this is just a really long spoon that you can use to get right into the corners of cocktails shakers to make sure everything is properly stirred. Get one of these and it can also easily double as a muddler so you don’t have to double up on tools!

A high quality blender

For drinks like daiquiris and margaritas, you’ll need a good blender for crushing ice and whizzing everything up to create your non-alcoholic flavour sensations.

Essential ingredients for home non-alcoholic cocktails

We’ve put together a list of the essential ingredients you’ll need to have on-hand to make non-alcoholic cocktails at home easily and quickly - so you’ll only have to head to the supermarket once!

Mixers

  • Tonic water
  • Sparkling water
  • Lime juice
  • Lemon juice
  • Orange juice
  • Cranberry juice
  • Ginger ale
  • Club soda
  • Bitters

Garnishes

  • Limes
  • Lemons
  • Oranges
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Salt
  • Sugar cubes
  • Raw sugar
  • Tabasco sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Black and Cayenne pepper
  • Coconut cream

Also, if you’re serious about the purity of your cocktails, you’ll need to buy ice from the store instead of regular ice-cube-tray ice cubes. Unfortunately, these can take on the flavours of the other foods in your freezer, and will taint your whole cocktail if you use them.

The types of glasses every home should have

If you’ve poured your heart and soul into a cocktail, then the least you could do is pour it into the right glass! Here are some of the class glass types that every home should have for those special days and evenings spent enjoying delicious tipples.

  • Vodka/schnapps/liqueur glass
  • Old-fashioned glass
  • Highball glass (for tall drinks)
  • Margarita glass
  • Cocktail/martini glass
  • Shot glass
  • Collins glass
  • Champagne flutes
